Bringing Hope to Refugees: The Woke Refugee

The Woke Refugee is a project to reach out to those in the refugee camps of Kenya and Uganda to let them know that there is a life for them beyond the camps. Not only will we provide needed items such as clothing, shoes, and toys, but we will provide laughter and inspiration to refugees to empower them make a new life for themselves.
My name is Ak Dans and i am a South Sudanese Stand-up Comedian, writer and an actor. I was born and raised in Kakuma Refugee camp 22 years ago in the Northern Region of Kenya. I started my comedy career 3 years ago in Kampala, Uganda where i was still seeking refuge. I went on to represent South Sudan in various comedy festivals and Countries in Africa like; Kenya, Botswana, South Africa, Rwanda and Uganda itself. During these tours, i realised that i had the opportunity and ability to tell the Untold stories about South Sudan and Refugee camps in general. Am not talking about war, guns, and hunger. Am talking about humor, culture, social life and art because there is always a good part of everything. This can at least help other refugees to oversee their trauma and make the good out of it. A lot of people struggle accepting who they are because of the stereotypes we have about them.
Due to this, i wrote a 1-hour comedy special titled "The Woke Refugee". This is a show telling my story from a Refugee Camp to a stage Champ that i am now. I would love this Comedy special to encourage other refugees to rise up and follow their dreams because nothing can limit them. I want to see more Refugee Poets, Musicians, Rappers, Comedians and Athletes.
I performed The Woke Refugee in my home Country last month and i went ahead and toured with it to Johannesburg and Botswana. Amidst these tours, i realized that i am communicating to the wrong people. The people that need to get my message are down there in various Refugee Camps feeling hopeless. So we decided to take the show on a tour in Various Refugee Camps in Africa starting with four Refugee Camps in East Africa which are; Bidi Bidi refugee settlement Camp (Uganda), Rhino Camp Refugee Settlement(Uganda), Imvempi Refugee settlement camp and finally my home camp Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya.
The Woke Refugee in the Camps is gonna be a nonprofit project and all the shows will have no cover charge. That's why we need funding to cater for the logistics of the shows in the camp. We are calling out anyone that can to donate whatever they can to enable us to make this project a success. We also accept tangible items like clothes, shoes, and toys. Let's wake some Talents up! Let's encourage them.
