On Friday afternoon, December 18, 2020, Joan Reynolds and her granddaughter Alyssa were on their way to take donations to hospice and someone crossed the yellow line and hit them head-on. Joan had to be cut out of the car by the emergency personnel and was transported to Chapel Hill via helicopter. Joan did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Alyssa was taken to Cone Peds ER. Alyssa is stable and will have surgery in the morning for a broken wrist and ankle. Aly also has some internal bleeding. She is scared and every time she wakes up she becomes upset and is sedated again. Late last night Aly stopped breathing twice and was moved to ICU. They were able to stabilize her enough today to do surgery to set her broken bones, but her breathing and heart rate are still unstable.
Ashley has multiple, serious health problems of her own that put her in the compromised immune system category. The death of her mother and the additional stress of her daughter's condition is compounding her situation even more.
To anyone who knows Ashley, she is an incredibly private person and never wants to seem like a burden to anyone else. She is also the FIRST one to extend a hand, offer support, be a shoulder to cry on, troubleshoot an issue, or anything else. This time, she needs our support. Her mom was her rock and Aly is her world. This has been heartbreaking and devastating for them all.
As she said, "we are broken."
We don't yet know how long Aly will need to be in the hospital or what the true extent of her injuries will be. However, help will be needed for funeral costs, medical expenses (both physical and emotional), as well as to assist financially while recovery is happening. Anything that you can contribute would be a major blessing to the family during this time of need!
