A Future Black Midwife

Donation protected
I believe that part of the solution to the black maternal mortality crisis in America is the cultivation of a larger workforce of black midwives. There is a growing body of literature demonstrating the positive impact of race concordance on health outcomes. A minority health survey concluded that “...African-Americans who are race concordant with their physicians reported a higher level of satisfaction compared with African-Americans who had white or Asian doctors,” (2002). When the lived experience of the provider reflect that of the patient, their relationship becomes a powerful vehicle for creating change. As a midwife, I want to focus on improving health disparities by learning to provide culturally appropriate, compassionate, and effective care to each of my patients. By prioritizing time to get to know my patient’s story and their priorities for their health, I can work with them to develop a plan of care they can carry out. Furthermore, being a midwife will allow me to develop the tools needed to further my dream of creating a safe space where residents of underserved communities can partner with highly skilled midwives to optimize their care.
