***UPDATE*** 04/04/14 - So I know people are itching to see Merryn and Matty's reaction when they recieve all of the money that we have raised together, and I know that I keep promising it is going to happen, however this fundrasier is about the two of them, so while things are still powering forward I will continue to run the page. And today I received some great news and it looks like this is about to take off again. I have been in contact with a few of Matty's great footy team mates and they have requested we run the page until Saturday the 10th of May, where we will present Mez and Matty with the money and possibly another big suprise that some important people are working on!" My name is Jason, I'm a friend of Matty and Merryn (Mez) Tonizzo. As you may or may not know, Matty and Mez have recently been confronted with one of life's greatest challenges. In the second half of last year, shortly after beginning their life together as husband and wife, Mez was diagnosed with cancer. As time went on and the therapy began, things got tougher as they learned that Mez would have to undergo 6 months of Chemotherapy.
After meeting up with Matty recently and hearing of the tough times which they now face, I felt they could do with a helping hand.
Before catching up with Matty I could only assume what life would be like for them, but I was unaware of the extent of hardship they are experiencing.
From my understanding, throughout the 6 months of Chemotherapy, Mez's Chemo schedule is as follows: she has the Chemo dose in hospital and for the first week she is very ill and unable to do much at all. During this time she needs care and support for most of her waking hours. At the start of the second week, she begins feeling better until the end of the week when this vicious cycle has to start again.
Now this is the part, which concerns me the most and where I saw an opportunity for us to make a difference. Matty and Mez have just began building their life together having recently purchased their first house. With a mortgage to pay and Mez unable to work, Matty is working hard to ensure the mortgage and expenses are paid. This means he is unable to take time off work to stay at home with his wife. So they have decided to make a sacrifice and to hold onto every couples dream. Mez has spent most of her time of late down to Sydney where she has daily care from her family whilst undergoing her treatment. Matty stay's in Brisbane and continues his day to day job and spend's most of his time alone. I cannot begin to imagine how either of them must feel. Matty can't be by his wife's side while she's undergoing one of the hardest times in her life. And Mez has to move away and leave her husband on his own to take care of everything that the two of them have built together. And all of this at only 26 years of age!
So here is what I propose. I believe that Merryn has 4 sessions left of therapy. Now I don't believe that any couple should be apart during these tough times, especially when they have such a large group of friends for support. So I have set up a fund and although we can't fix everything, we sure bloody well can take a lot of financial pressure off them and help give them the option and freedom to spend more time together during the remaining weeks of Mez's treatment and hopefully enough to help out during the recovery. I'm going set the goal high at $20,000. I know this seems like a lot, but in today's world that doesn't go so far.
Now, I know that you have told yourself at least once in your life that if a friend ever needed you, you would be there for them. Now's the time to prove to yourself and a friend in need, that you will live up to what you believe. To kick this thing off, I'm going to open the fund with $500.
I would like to keep this a surprise for Merryn and Matty and would appreciate if when sharing it on facebook that you click custom and block Matt and Merryn from seeing it and select only friends can see it. If you have any troubles send me a message and I can help.
