Fire then car accident devastates family.
In April, the Velez family lost virtually all their possessions in an apartment fire in the public housing complex where they lived. Since then, the family has been surviving on donations from extended family and the community.
Last week, Giovanni and his twin brother Gianni, both second graders at Columbus Elementary School, were walking with their mom to a 1 p.m. dentist appointment when they were struck by an out of control driver. Miraculously, mom and Gianni escaped the horrific accident with minor injuries, however, Giovanni was not so lucky. The 7 year old was smashed up between the stone wall of a building and the car. He sustained multiple compound fractures to both legs and one arm. The lengthy surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital where Gio was taken required multiple rods and plates to repair his broken pelvis, femur, fibula, tibia and humerus, as well as work to repair his crushed bladder and spleen.
Gio spent 5 days in Yale’s pediatric ICU and has a long, painful road of recovery ahead of him. His care will be ongoing and costly. And yet he remains upbeat and looks forward to FaceTime with his classmates and visits from his teachers.
Gio is being transferred yet again to a third hospital, the HFSC (Hospital for Special Care) in New Britain for continued physical therapy and medical care.
The impaired driver, had no license, no registration, and no insurance and was allegedly arrested for a similar offense 3 days later in another city!
