My amazing sister has changed so many lives! This young woman is so generous and giving with her time, gifts, and love. Everyone she encounters she changes for the better. My sister left Iowa at age 24 to move in with me in Colorado and become our nanny. She raised my baby boys so that I could continue to teach every day. She cleaned my house, made meals, and managed my household for seven years. She sacrificed her life for my sons and me.
Last year, my sister decided to return to school to become an elementary teacher and change the future lives of children lucky enough to experience her gift. Over the last year, she was tutoring students, working at a preschool, and studying to be a teacher. From running half marathons and hiking 14's to volunteering her time with Habitat For Humanity, Denver Art Museum, and mentoring at-risk families, this inspiring young lady was sharing her passion for life.
My beautiful little sister, Thea Swanson, has received life - changing news over the past few weeks. This amazing woman is in the fight for her life! On Tuesday, February 12, 2014, Thea Swanson was diagnosed with Stage 4 urothelial carcinoma. This cancer originated in the kidney but has now spread to muscle and skin. Thea began chemotherapy on Saturday, February 15.
Thea will not be able to be a full-time student or work during the intense treatments. Because she no longer qualifies for health insurance through school and work, we need to raise approximately $20,000 to cover health insurance premiums and cancer related medical expenses that the insurance does not cover. We have recently learned that Thea will experience at least six months of chemotherapy followed by radiation treatments.
I love my sister. She is simply amazing, and I cannot imagine life without her. The Swanson/Chavez Family appreciates your generosity and support during our time of need.
