Hello! I'm Marcos and I'm 8 years old. Joost and Virginia are my parents and I have a brother, Alexander.
On June 19, 2018, exactly 2 years ago, I became ill. My back got infected with a virus. I couldn't move, not even breathe, and had to go straight to the hospital.
After two months of intensive care I was taken to a special hospital in Toledo where I had to stay for 8 months and do all kinds of exercises.
Hello! I'm Joost, Marcos' father.
The virus that Marcos has had is the Enterovirus 68 that has led to acute flaccid myelitis (AFM, a new kind of polio), and was first discovered in the US in 2014.
Approximately 75% of Marcos' central nerve centre is affected.
We temporarily moved to Portugal for the best possible treatment. Here Marcos gets 3 hours of intensive physiotherapy a day. Heavy and painful, but with his desire to be able to walk again and an enormous willpower, he is always going a little bit forward.
We are enormously proud of our SuperMarcos and his relentless dedication, as young as he is. However, it would be very supportive for him if more of his muscles could function...
In the USA we have discovered a doctor, Amy Moore, specialized in this disease, who has operated on many children since 2016 with good and hopeful results (see Dr. Amy Moore's letter below). She performs nerve transfers, connecting the nerves that are still receiving signal to the disabled muscles.
However, this has to be done as soon as possible, otherwise these muscles will no longer work.
