Dexcom CGM: Continuous Glucose Monitor

Donation protected

Dear Friends,

As most of you probably know, I am a type 1 (insulin dependent) diabetic. I have tried for over 16 years to regulate it with very little success. My A1C levels (basically, a 3 month average of blood sugars) have never during that time reached the safe region of under 7mml. My Doctors are now telling me that I am beginning to go blind in one eye.

A Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGM) is a devise that tests your blood glucose levels every 5 minutes and charts them. It can tell you if you are trending up or down, and how steeply. It enables you to see patterns and act upon them. It also ALARMS if you are going out of range. This feature would enable me to sleep without fear of waking up sick, or not waking up at all. Currently, more mornings than not, I wake up dangerously high. This means that damage has been occurring to my cells for hours as I sleep. It is a remarkable devise that allows diabetics to achieve close to non-diabetic control. All I want is what most people take for granted everyday... a chance to let my body achieve homoeostasis (balance).

So, despite the fact that I cannot financially afford a CGM, I am also at the point where I cannot delay purchasing one much longer.

The only time during my journey as a diabetic that I even came close to a healthy target range was when I was participating in a clinical study of CGMs. So I already know that this is a big part of the solution for me.

I have exhausted every possible funding avenue to attain this much needed medical devise. I have approached The March of Dimes, Trillium, Ryerson University's group insurance, Ontario Disability Support Program(ODSP), the Canadian Diabetes Association and the Assistive Devises Program (ADP). Each one turned me down. It simply isn't funded by private insurance, Government programs or non-profits yet!

As I am currently a full-time student, I simply cannot afford this on my own.

I respect that many of you are in the same boat financially. We all have needs and goals! If you can help in any way, I would very much appreciate it! Even $5 can make a difference when we collectively come together.

I also welcome prayers and words of encouragement! :D

Thank you for taking the time to read this!
