Dominican Republic Mission Trip

Donation protected
Me and my wife Sophie have been blessed by God in so many ways - in the form of amazing friends and family that show us love and support... a warm, dry home to live in... and the amazing house of worship, Immanuel Lutheran, that God has led us to.

In all of these blessings and gifts of love from God, we've been able to experience firsthand, the power of his love and grace... and we've come to realize that love is the greatest gift of all... not just in the receiving of love, but the giving of love to those around us, both near and far…

Sophie and I have been given an amazing opportunity to join several other young adults from Immanuel, and Faith Lutheran of Troy to travel to the Dominican Republic, and share God's love with a family in need (a Mom, a Dad, and Children who do not have a place to call home).  A family who’s currently sleeping on a floor of dirt, under a shack made of garbage…  A family who’s barely getting by on less than $2 a day...  A family who thinks they’ve been forgotten...

But we can’t do this alone.  We're calling on the love of those around us to help sponsor Sophie and I on this Mission to build this family a home, and to share the word and love of God with them.

So many of you helped me and my family last year as we struggled with the news and hardships of my Dad and Grandma being diagnosed with cancer... and my Grandma losing her battle with the disease...  and we can't thank you all enough for the support you gave to us during that difficult time.  You are all such a blessing, and I'm calling on you all again to be a blessing to another family, and asking that this year, we help to fight suffering head-on, and make 2018 a year of joy!  If you would, please share this post and give if you’re able… and help us to spread the love of God to a hurting world.  One family at a time.

God bless.

-Michael

Details of the Mission are below:

When:
May 14th thru the 20th, 2018 | Dominican Republic - Santiago

Cost:
$2200 (the combined cost for both Sophie and I - includes airfare, passports, baggage, food, lodging, in country transportation, & construction costs)

The need:
While the Dominican’s $1 billion tourist industry may give the appearance of a thriving nation, the stark reality is that 40% of Dominicans live in poverty, surviving on less than $1.50 a day, and the unemployment rate stands at a daunting 60%.  Families are left in desperation struggling to pay for food, safe drinking water and adequate housing.  Many families have to choose whether or not to put the majority of their income into housing, knowing that there will only be pennies left to provide other basic necessities.  Heartrendingly, some families get caught up in the human trafficking industry, which is a $9.5 billion a year industry in the Dominican.

What can we do?:
This trip is about more than just building a house. By working alongside the Dominican church and Casas por Cristo we will help alleviate families’ financial burdens.  With the provision of safe and secure housing, the largest tangible gift anyone will ever receive, we can proclaim the truth of God’s love not only to a family, but also to the community at large.  Through the gift of a free home to a family in need, we also have the opportunity to be living examples of Christ’s love for His people.
There is no greater reward than when we are able to pray with the family, and give them the keys to their new home.
