Funding the Future

Beschermde donatie
Dear World,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Kristen Finger and I am a Junior at Rutgers University, majoring in Animal Science on a pre-veterinary track. I grew up in a small town in Northern Jersey and dream of becoming a Marine Veterinarian.

My love of animals and the ocean started before I can even remember. As many young girls do, I dreamt of being a veterinarian as soon as I learned that the profession even existed. Being the determined person that I am, that dream continues to stick with me.

Since coming to college, I jumped in head first into the Animal Science field. Within my first week as a freshman, I worked on the Rutgers University Farm as a federal work-study student. Since then, I have delivered litters of piglets, goat kids and lambs, medicated and cared for the sick and injured, as well as witnessed the sorrow of losing resident farm animals. Now, as a Teaching Assistant, and an experienced work-study student,  I teach fellow Animal Science students how to properly care for these animals and keep them happy and healthy.

Last summer, I had the amazing opportunity to intern at the Mercer County Wildlife Center in Lambertville, New Jersey. There, I cleaned, fed, and medicated the rehabilitating wildlife that were brought in.  Some of the wild animals with which I worked include raccoons, foxes, skunks, bats, raptors, squirrels, deer, and many others. The center rehabilitates about 2,500 animals annually, the majority of which I had the pleasure to help. As a pre-veterinary intern, I was chosen to co-manage the center's Rabies Vector Species Vaccination Program which vaccinates raccoons, skunks, and foxes.

In addition to interning last summer, I also began working as a Receptionist and Veterinary Technician at a local veterinary hospital. At the hospital, I have learned the business and customer service side of the profession. While working with people's precious pets is great, working with the animal's precious owners can be interesting.

So now what?

This summer I will be following my dream to work with marine animals at the Dolphin Research Center located in Grassy Key, Florida. My ultimate career and life goal is to become a Marine Veterinarian. This internship will bridge the gap between my previous experience and end goal. As most bridges do, this will cost a little bit of money. This internship is unpaid and I will therefore have to self-fund all the expenses. As you have read, I work several jobs during the semester in order to pay for my undergraduate studies.

My anticipated/estimated expenses for this summer are:
Housing ~$3,000
Food ~$3,000
Transportation ~$600
Miscellaneous expenses ~$500

Any amount that you can manage would be most appreciated. Even the smallest contribution will make a huge difference...not only in my life but in the lives of the animals that I hope to treat some day! Thank you in advance for anything you can do!

With love from yours truly,
Kristen Finger (future DVM)
