Juan and Amy’s IVF Journey

Infertility is a medical condition that affects your mind, body, and spirit. Mentally, it consumes your daily thoughts. Physically, it controls your body and emotions. You find yourself dealing with overwhelming frustration and crying with disappointment, while wondering if you will ever conceive a child of your own.

Not many people in our lives know about our struggles through infertility. Our journey has been private until now. Infertility is isolating. You feel abnormal, broken, and sometimes even shameful. People don't talk about infertility and when it is spoken about, it is often uncomfortable for all.

Even more frustrating is that infertility treatment is not covered by insurance plans in California and is extremely costly. We both work at one of the highest nationally ranked hospitals in California and we are offered excellent health benefits, however these services are not covered.

Ultimately, we have always felt that one day all this pain would make sense and our prayers would be answered because we have a strong desire to become parents. We have tried to conceive on our own with no success so we decided to get checked to make sure we are healthy. Our doctor recommended an ultrasound for Amy, semen analysis for Juan and a full list of diagnostic tests for both of us. Amy had the ultrasound a few weeks later that confirmed she has an endocrine disorder called poly-cystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS. At this time they also determined that Juan’s sperm were great but just not aggressive enough. They referred to them as “Gentleman Sperm.” After this diagnosis, Amy had a procedure called a hysterosalpingogram   (HSG), where contrast dye is forced into the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries through a catheter to see if they are functioning and open through the use of x-ray. This was one of the most painful procedures that Amy has gone through during this infertility journey. Sadly, the results were poor. Her right fallopian tube is blocked and has numerous diverticuli-like polyps, which puts Amy at very high risk of an ectopic pregnancy if she were to conceive naturally. IVF, however, will completely eliminate this risk.

The next step recommended to us was a procedure called intrauterine insemination or IUI. During this process, Amy was placed on medications to stimulate ovulation throughout the month. This process has a cost of around $600 for each completed round and we have completed 5 unsuccessful rounds.

And finally, our doctors have told us that our final shot at becoming parents now has led us to IVF or invitro fertilization. They have said that we have an excellent chance of this being a success for us.

The difficult part is that the cost of an IVF procedure is approximately $20,000, which requires payment up front. However, our desire to have a child of our own is something we want more than anything. Never in a million years did we think we would struggle this much to become parents but we cannot think of anything more fulfilling than having a child together. To be called Mom and Dad one day is something we deeply desire. We have so much love to give and we want to share that love by growing our family and making it complete.

We are asking you all to help us fulfill this desire and assist us in financing these steps in our infertility journey. We appreciate anything you can do to help us because without you all this will not be possible. Thank you for taking the time to read this and we appreciate anything you can do to help us.
