As a way to explore the world while learning more about the medical field, I would love to go to the Philippines this summer for a volunteer internship. This internship will allow me to shadow nurses and to learn about the health system of the Philippines. The organization I’m planning on going under is the Children Family Health International (CFHI).
The Children Family Health International is a nonprofit organization that that focuses on Global Health Education. They strive to inform young people about the interplays between disease processes, social circumstances, poverty, resilience, geopolitical realities, historical contexts, culture, and the complexities of health and wellness. This organization is known for presenting ‘real-life’ global health, while nesting programs in gold-standard education pedagogies and safety standards. They really focus on making sure only QUALIFIED participants actually are involved in helping patients instead of letting untrained participants do medical work. Their mission statement that they provide a community-based global health education for students and institutions. Their unique model fosters reciprocal partnership and empowerment in local communities, transforming perspectives about self, healing, and global citizenship.
The program I hope to do is the 4-week Remote Island Medicine program. In this program, I will travel to the geographically isolated disadvantaged areas to learn from fellow doctors and nurses about how they do their best to treat those patients. Healthcare in those areas lack because they usually lack investment, supplies, and infrastructure. The goal of this organizational trip is to gain first hand experience of the struggles the villagers face and to experience how local people around the area are coming together to better their health outcomes.
The intended goal amount I would like to raise is $5,000. This amount would cover the program, plane tickets, and a little extra money for my own expenses in case of emergency. I am aware that this amount is a lot, but any amount would be greatly appreciated!
From the cost of the program to the impact I will get out of the program, I was hesitant on really putting my mind into this program. However, a good friend of mine said to me, “It doesn’t hurt to try. If you have the passion for it, go for it and don’t underestimate your abilities.” These words really had an impact on me and made me determined to do this program. That good friend passed away recently this year and going on this trip would be everything to me because I would love to take his advice and go on this trip. He positively impacted everyone he met and I would love to follow his way of living and do the same. Additionally, this trip was a long term goal of mine ever since I was young. I am fortunate enough to grow up in a modern city in which I didn’t have to face such hardships like walking miles to find clean water or struggling to find adequate healthcare. Although I will not be doing any of the hands on medical treatment, I would love contribute my time by listening and learning about the stories of the people there. I feel that just taking the time to listen and hear their stories can have such a huge impact on the villagers. I hope to bring positivity into their lives and give them hope that everything WILL get better.
Once again, I wanted to thank everyone for their support and contributions to make this trip happen for me!
