Hamjambo! My name is Aliyha Crawford and I am a freshman dance major at Howard University in Washington D.C. As a student of Howard University I have been exposed a unique environment in which I have learned an abundance of information pertaining to my course of study, myself as an individual, and life. It has allowed me to expand my knowledge while actively participating in the various opportunities offered at the University.
Recently, I have been given the amazing opportunity of studying abroad in Kenya this summer. I have always wanted to experience a different culture and I believe that this would be an amazing and humbling experience. During the Study Abroad includes 60 hours of intensive language study, Historical and cultural studies, Swahili practicum with local students, volunteer work at a primary school, educational field-trips and excursions to cultural institutions and historic sites, and hands-on exposure to Swahili arts, crafts, and cuisine. By participating in this program I would be able to be of service to others while enhancing my Swahili speaking abilities and also broadening my knowledge of the culture.
Growing up in Las Vegas I was heavily exposed to the Arts through the West Las Vegas Arts Center and the local performng Arts Schools (The Academy of the Arts and K.O. Knudson Middle School). While participating in the youth groups offered at the West Las Vegas Arts Center I was introduced to various aspects of the African culture, through dance, which helped me have a sense of self as I developed into a young woman. I believe that this study abroad program wuld be a life changing opportunity and wuld also give me the chance to have first hand experience with the cultures that I grew up learning about.
This opportunity is something that I am determned to acheive. By donating to my fundraiser you are helping me achieve a goal that I am very passionate about.
