Please help me help my friend Tom and his wife Jen. Jen was diagnosed with brain cancer and has battling this since their only son was 4 months old. Tom and their families found a clinical trial which alleviated most of her symptoms for some time. Although Jen had worked a bit during some of her chemo she hasn't been able to work recently. She is now needing assistance at home with herself and with childcare while Tom is working. Home health has been set up this week. Tom has been the only support for the family, is in the Army reserves and works long hours at his full time job as a PT. Their son is in day care and needs a lot of babysitting due to Jen's long appointments at Dana Farber & her inability to care for herself and him.
I can tell you from first hand experience when your child or spouse has cancer not only is it emotionally draining but it is financially devastating as well. Just one trip to DF from Londonderry,NH is about $100. a day. You pay to park all day, you eat at their cafeteria twice most times as you're there all day, gas for the 70mile round trip, and usually people have co pays. Never mind missing work. You hope and pray you don't run out of earned time but eventually you do. So on top of dealing with cancer and all that encompasses you also worry about your mortgage, buying healthy foods, and the everyday bills that are piling up around you.
Tom & Jen has raised so much money (with their friends and family) for their foundation, Gray Matters, and I really wanted to help them and raise some funds for them personally. There is not much else we can do to help besides cook and babysit. (See their "Lotsa Hands" web page to volunteer to help) I hope they can have a bit of relief from the stress of bills so they can deal with the crappy hand they've been dealt. Every little bit helps. I want Tom to be able to spend quality time with his family without worrying about missing a paycheck.
As a mom of young children the thought of dealing with a terminal illness is unbearable. This is all I can think of to help. Please help our friends Tom & Jen.
