Yasmine, the Kidney Kid

Donation protected
Going away to college is a tough transition, even under the best of circumstances. Yasmine doesn't have the best of circumstances. Shortly after arriving in DC last week, Yasmine started feeling sick. We had a trip to the ED at GWU on Thursday night, then another trip to Sibley on Friday night. She was determined to get to the orientation activities and moved in on Saturday, but was worn out. She quickly made some pretty awesome friends. Sunday we watched her be inducted into the Goucher student body.Monday I got a call from Yasmine asking me to come to campus. Following protocol I declined and reassured her she really didn't need me. Turns out she did. The school ended up sending her by ambulance to St. Joseph's - University of Maryland Medical Center and she was admitted for Nephrotic Syndrome - her kidneys not behaving.Since then, she has been working hard to get well, but she is fighting some pretty significant pain from her body swelling from fluid retention. Her little body has swollen up 30 lbs since we came south 10 days ago. She had a kidney biopsy with initial diagnosis of Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. She has started treatment and we wait for her kidneys to get back to work.
