Greetings Family & Friends,
As some of you may know, I lived in São Paulo, Brazil for about a year where I taught English as a Second Language to native Portuguese speakers. During my tenure abroad, I was captivated by the thought of being surrounded by Brazilians; learning the customs and hearing the beautiful variations of Portuguese that served as genuine music to my ears.
This summer 2014, I was presented with an amazing opportunity to return to Brazil to study the relationship between Identity and Language in Brazilian culture while simultaneously conducting research in Bahia, Brazil. Bearing in mind my goals and aspirations for conducting research with native Portuguese speakers, this trip would be quite conducive to my education as a future linguist. Additionally, from personal experience, I have learned that immersion is one of the best ways not only to acquire a language, but to develop an understanding and respect for the people of that language.
I am humbly requesting your love and financial assistance as I have high hopes of achieving and discovering new perspectives in the field of linguistics. I am striving to raise about $9,000. The required fee for the program alone is about $5,500--that does not include the round-trip airfare of about $1,500. Additionally, as a researcher, I must possess the necessary monetary funds to purchase tools and instruments used for my research project and must also be able to compensate participants for their services. Though I am a graduate assistant at USF already, the funds that I earn monthly are not enough for me to pay for my trip. I come to you all gratefully, asking for your assistance.
