In early July, Dave discovered a sore spot on the bottom of his foot. The doctors identified it as a diabetic wound and treated it. Unfortunately that would not be the end of the story.A few weeks later, little improvement could be seen. The doctors ran tests and discovered that there were complications with the vascular system in his left leg and that there was little to no blood flow reaching the foot. Further tests concluded severe hardening of the artery in that leg. As a result, the foot was going to be unable to heal on its own.On Monday, August 6, Dave was admitted to the VA hospital in West Roxbury, Massachusetts where he had the dead tissue on the bottom of his foot removed as well as a toe. Then, he underwent a 7hr operation to repair the vascular system in the leg. At that time it was unclear whether the rest of the toes would need amputation, but we would wait and see how his foot responded to the vascular repair.Today, Dave’s foot is healing nicely. He did have another toe removed. However because of the dead tissue and gangrene there is not enough skin to close the wound on his foot. And, the oxygenation in his blood is too low to facilitate the healing process. He needs 25 treatments of hyperbolic oxygen therapy to try and stimulate healing in order to prevent further amputation. He has been admitted for the next 5 weeks to the VA hospital in Brockton MA to undergo this therapy.The VA has been a wonderful resource and caretaker for Dave, but they do not cover the cost of traveling for Barbara to be able to be with him in MA. The cost of gasoline, tolls, food, etc. has become too overwhelming. This Go Fund Me is to raise money so that Barbara can be with Dave during his treatment. This is essential for both of them to keep up their spirits during this healing time.We are optimistic these treatments will work but there is. I guarantee.
