Welcome to My Campaign: #6000forus

Help to increase healthcare research and raise awareness of various health problems faced by the BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) community.

Summary - What is #6000ForUs?

Hello - my name is Adedoyin (Doyin) Sonibare, a financial management graduate from East London who has a strong passion for healthcare. I have recently been offered a place at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL ) to study a MSc in Global Public Health . Through private donations I have raised £4,000, but unfortunately I'm still £6,000 short. QMUL require me to pay my tuition fees by Monday 3rd September 2018, if I don't raise the funds I will not be able to start the course.

My Story

So you may be wondering why I am jumping from Financial Management to Global Public Health?

In July 2014, I lost my Aunty to breast cancer and decided to embark on a   to honour her memory. As I began to raise awareness of the disease, I engaged in a lot of conversations with friends and colleagues, who knew of loved ones who had encountered such diseases. It was then that I realised the magnitude of the problem, and I also became aware of the negative social stigma attached to non-communicable diseases within the BAME community. There is a need to change social attitudes towards such issues.

Coincidentally, during in the summer of 2014, I was a summer intern at IBM working in the healthcare department for UK and Ireland. I discovered how technology was being used to detect early signs of cancer in patients; at the time it was a medical breakthrough as detecting cancer in earlier stages gave patients a better chance of survival. I then wondered how many more lives could be saved if we used technology more efficiently to support healthcare professionals.

I believe public health should be important to everyone, as we should all endeavour to improve the quality of healthcare provided for every single person in the UK regardless of an individual's ethnicity. However in order, to implement healthcare policies which are beneficial to the BAME community, we first need to increase our awareness through undertaking research and sharing results with healthcare bodies. As a young woman of African diaspora, I believe I have duty to carry out this research and effect change, not just for myself but for the generations who left their home countries and for future generations to come.

Outside of education and work, I am a Diamond Ambassador for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award and a Breast Cancer Now Representative. In addition, I regularly share my story with students and early professionals to encourage young people to consider STEM careers.

Why would I love to study Global Public Health at Queen Mary University of London?

QMUL is in the top 10 UK universities for medicine. Furthermore as a member of the Russell Group, the university conducts high standards of research. The course is designed to provoke critical thinking and stimulate ideas for practical solutions to pressing and immediate problems within Public Health.

The following will be covered:

- the influence of biological, social, economic and environmental determinants on health and health inequalities, both between and within countries

- interpretation of data, study design and statistical analysis, to learn how statistics can help answer real life questions

- the application of social and economic theories to health systems policy

- structural and functional components of a health system, including the mechanisms and systems for generating resources, financing health care delivery and designing the management-administrative arrangement

- approaches and types of interventions aimed at preventing and controlling communicable and non-communicable diseases

- approaches to the study of health policy and social systems, including health care systems, hospitals, clinics, non-government organisations, communities and households.

Where will the Money go?

I am raising £6,000 to pay the full cost of my tuition fees. If there are extra funds, I will use this to cover books, photocopying, printing, stationary and travel costs.
