Dear friends, family, and contributors,
On November 12th, 2013, our lives were turned upside down when my father Emiliano suffered a devastating accident at work. As an employee of a known chain of supermarkets in Porto Alegre, Brazil, one of his jobs was to open the store for business every morning. As he was opening the main parking lot gate, the roller that slides the gate came loose and caused the gate to come crashing on top of him, hitting him in the face and causing him to fall backwards and, consequently, hit the back of his head on the pavement.
By my estimates, the gate is around 15 ft. long and 6 ft. height, and it must weigh in excess of 500 to 700 lbs.
Dad was taken to the hospital with severe injuries to his skull and brain, which resulted in cerebral hemmorrhage. At one point, we didn't know if he was going to make it.
Within 2 weeks of his hospital stay, he developed Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia. They were forced to do a tracheotomy to aid his breathing. At every turn, the doctors believed he would survive, but continuosly cautioned us that, unfortunately, dad would never go back to being the same Emiliano we have known and loved.
He has slowly recovered to the point where the trach tube was removed on December 31st. After lots of prayers and well-wishes from people all around the world, and the terrific work performed by the doctors at the hospital, he was cleared to go home. He can't speak, or walk, and care for his own hygiene. We expect he will have months -- if not years -- of physical, neurological, and psychological treatment. The prognosis for his full recovery is still unknown.
As you can imagine, this event has been devastating to my dad and mom's finances. Dad is going to be 70 this year, living on whatever little retirement he has coming from the government. I'm sure he didn't have to go back to work for sport. He, like so many senior citizens today, needed the money to supplement his income. Without it, and with the added medical expense this event has brought, their finances have reached a critical point.
Please help with whatever amount you can afford. The proceeds will
help with the medical/hygiene supplies, medical bills, and everyday living expenses while he recuperates.
