ALL IN FOR EMMA

Welcome family, friends, and followers to Emma’s journey. We would like to thank all of you for the continued prayers, hope, and donations for our Emma Mae.

Emma Mae Kenyon is a 22 year-old senior at Bloomsburg University, studying secondary education and was on track to graduate in May 2018. She is a bright, bubbly, generous being who has always put others before herself. She was in the midst of her first student teaching assignment at Columbia-Montour VoTec. Emma is a daughter, sibling, aunt, mentor, sister of Phi Sigma Sigma, devoted Catholic, Disney enthusiast and dream-chaser. She is so dearly loved by all and we have missed her witty personality during her continued hospitalization. Her parents, brothers, sisters, and extended family are heartbroken, but hopeful, as they cope with the absence of Emma while she is healing.

As her family, we wanted to share her story:Emma’s terrifying experience began Sunday, February 4, 2018, at 6:00pm. Throughout the day, the mid-state area had received a slushy mixture that later turned to ice. Emma was traveling to Bloomsburg University from Mechanicsburg after visiting with family for the SuperBowl. Emma was carefully navigating through the snow and ice, driving well below the speed limit, and wearing her seat belt when her vehicle lost traction and slid into oncoming traffic. Her car was struck by a moving vehicle on the passenger side, causing the pillar between the front and back doors in Emma’s car to move into the cabin. As the car was moving sideways, so did Emma’s body during the crash. Emma experienced multiple injuries during her accident, but the most severe was her Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). This occurred from the whiplash effect on her neck and head, as well as from being slammed into either the headrest of the passenger seat or the driver’s side airbag being deployed. This caused her to lose consciousness and incur the devastating injury. Emma also had a collapsed right lung and minor torn spleen. No injuries were sustained by the other individual involved in the accident.

Emma laid unconscious, and fortunately there were witnesses to the accident that immediately sprang into action—calling 911 and helping in any way that they could. The individual in the other car had EMT training and entered Emma’s vehicle trying to stabilize her. The emergency personnel and paramedics cut her out of her car by removing the passenger side door. These heroic first responders then worked on her at the scene and rushed her to the Geisinger Medical Center in Danville Pennsylvania, a level 1 Trauma only minutes away where medical experts were standing by.

After several radiological exams, reflex exams, and assessments, it was determined that Emma Mae experienced a Diffuse Axonal Injury (DIA) and arachnoid hemorrhage. The staff at Geisinger Medical Center worked very hard to have Emma moved to a location closer to home, Mechanicsburg, PA., where she could continue her recovery. She was transferred to Penn State Hershey Rehabilitation Hospital on March 4th. Here, Emma began her rigorous rehabilitation process concentrating on Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapies. This road to recovery will be very long and potentially expensive. Our goal is to ensure that Emma has access to the best possible care no matter of whether it is covered by her health insurance or not. We are preparing ourselves for this long and arduous journey, and we believe that staying positive and focused on the end goal will give Emma the maximum benefit.

While Emma has recovered from her coma, she is still fighting to get all of the muscles in her body to respond to her. She is working so very hard every day in her therapy sessions to regain the muscle functions. Please understand that, as her family and friends, we are choosing to remain hopeful and positive about Emma’s condition. Prayer, God’s grace, the excellent therapists, and Emma’s fighting spirit will guide her to overcome this accident. We ask that you please join us in continuing to pray for our amazing Emma Mae. We are graciously asking, if you are able and willing, to please make a monetary donation through this page for Emma Mae’s ongoing journey—help us provide the best care and the greatest potential for Emma’s recovery. Through your donations, we are hoping to contribute to Emma’s medical bills and future rehabilitation. Any and all donations are accepted with our sincerest gratitude and heartfelt thanks for all that you are doing for our Emma Mae. May God bless each and every one of you. #Pray4EmmaMae #EmmaStrong #AllIn4Emma #ItGoesOn #ToTheMoonAndBack
