Current Situation
On August 5th, 2018 Lombok, the neighboring province to the east of Bali, Indonesia experience a 6.9 magnitude earthquake 31km deep. Since then, 31 earthquakes have been reported ranging in magnitude of 1 - 5.9. The critical areas affected are the islands of Gili Trawangan, Gili Air and Gili Meno. In addition, the shorelines of North Lombok. The Gili islands have suffered million of dollars in damage due to the earthquake. Despite these concerning reports, most properties on the islands have western ownerships with insurance coverages.
The purpose of this fund is to fundraise for individuals of Northern Lombok who have suffered equivalent economic damages as the Gili Island but received no governmental help. Locals working on the Gili Islands were evacuated back to Lombok where they found their villages and homes destroyed.
347 people have been reported dead since the August 5th earthquake.
The Story
Traveling the Gili islands a week prior to the earthquake, i had the chance to meet locals from Lombok who were working at Bale Sasak Hostel (“Bale” translate to “Home” and “Sasak” to “Culture” - “Home Culture”). Prior to moving to Bale Sasak hostel, i was lodging at another hostel on Gili Trawangan. My experience at this hostel was anything but welcoming. William (Amar Dzuriat) and Mutiyashin Mumut welcomed me into Bale Sasak like i was a long lost relative. It was a tradition at Bale Sasak Hostel to jam out in the evenings with the travelers living their. I had the opportunity to experience this my last night at the hostel. At the time, I was experiencing some personal problems. To be welcomed with such unconditional love in a hostel by strangers is not something i can remember experiencing during any of my travels.
4 days after the earthquake, William attempted to call me. I was not able to make the call at the time. When i finally looked on messanger, William and Mutiyashin both sent me messages asking if I could help in Lombok. William lives in central Lombok and wasn't affected by the earthquake. Mutiyashin lives on the north shores of Lombok, her village and family home both lie flat on the ground.
August 13th I booked a flight from Bali to Lombok Praya with Olivia Lorca to join up with Firman and his team. We are currently delivering food & water to the locals who are not receiving any aid from the government. We will continue our efforts until the donations run out.
Goal
(Updated)
To raise 10,000$ - We are still are looking at different avenues to see where the money may be most beneficial. Lombok has found some stability now do to the non-spot work of the Indonesian Government, NGO's and independent helpers.
Our aim now is raises funds that will help develop long -term assets (Education, housing)
Periodic updates will be sent out to inform every donor where the money is going and what long-term investment for Lombok, Indonesia we have decided to make.
