Harry's Medical Fund

Harry is an amazing husband, devoted father, hilarious friend, and genuinely a good person, even through the trials that he, and our family, have faced. Trials that seem unreal to me, even as I write them.

This January, we received another heartbreaking diagnosis.  Harry is in stage 5 kidney failure. Dialysis is in our imminent future, and he is not a candidate for a kidney transplant, because of a prior cancer diagnosis. This cancer diagnosis that was given two years ago, while I was going through chemotherapy for breast cancer.

After many tests, including a bone marrow and kidney biopsy, we were told that Harry's kidney failure stemmed from a blood clot disorder (Lupus AntiCoagulent Disorder) that was discovered when he was in college. Over the last twenty years, small blood clots have been going through his organs, and damaging the kidneys.

Harry has been in and out of the hospital multiple times in just the last year and the hospitalizations are getting more frequent.

Unfortunately, he is a complicated case, due to: diabetes, seizure disorder, blood clot disorder, cancer, and kidney failure.  The doctors are just scrambling to keep him stabilized and on the correct, and overwhelming amount, of medications. While our family is just scrambling to keep it emotionally, physically, and financially stabilized.

We have taken big steps, like filing for disability, which is quite the process.

I let my oncologist know that I do need to get back to working full time, and am taking steps towards that, which requires instating malpractice insurance, current bar dues, etc.  Harry is stubbornly, against advisement, going on interviews and as always most focused on taking care of his family.

We have taken little steps, like multiple garage sales, cancelling amenities, house cleaning, dog-sitting, etc. No step or amount earned is actually too little at this point.

Unfortunately, we are running out of steps to take that will come before we reach a point we cannot come back from.  The point where we can't keep a roof over our kiddos head, where we can't afford both of our monthly medications, and lose our health insurance, which are my biggest personal fears. Already, one of my specialist will not see me because I could not pay the bill owed.

The generosity of our families has enabled us to keep our medical insurance. Neither one of us could survive without medical insurance, and are un-insurable if it lapses.

So now we are humbly turning to the generosity of others.  I have to believe that if we can fight through a little longer, that we will come out on the other side.
