A couple years ago Joel and Linda decided to expand their family. With some assistance from fertility specialists, Joel and Linda finally were able to get pregnant during 2017. They were extremely excited and looking forward to their new little girl. However, as so many people come to realize, things can happen, despite how well the mother takes care of herself and the baby. Unfortunately, at only 25 weeks, Linda's amniotic fluid decreased significantly, and Linda was forced into delivery. The baby did not survive.

Needless to say, Joel and Linda were heartbroken. They had worked so hard to get pregnant, but through no fault of their own it did not work out in the end.

It took a lot of courage for Joel and Linda to start the journey again. They were able to find the strength and during 2018 they conceived once again. Throughout this second pregnancy, Joel and Linda went to regular visits with specialists to monitor the development of their second little girl. With guidance from their health care providers, Joel and Linda were assured things were optimistic.

On September 1st, Linda's maternal instinct kicked in and she became concerned about her baby. Joel took her to the hospital, and the physicians decided an emergency C-section was necessary. As with the first pregnancy, Linda's amniotic fluid was dangerously low. The doctors decided the best way to save the baby was to have her delivered.

On September 1st, 2018, baby Mia was born at just 27 weeks old, weighing only 1 pound 14 ounces. Since she was born, Mia has been in the Neonatal ICU, where she will likely spend the first couple months of her life. Mia has been showing signs of positive development--even more so than other babies in the same unit who were born later in their respective term--and the outlook is good.

Our family is optimistic that Mia will fully develop into a healthy girl. However, when Joel and Linda can finally take little Mia home for the first time, they will take with them significant medical bills. The U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reports that medical costs for the average very-low-birthweight infant are $79,000, compared with $1,000 for a normal newborn. Statistics are difficult to apply to one's own situation, because often the conversation revolves around averages. Whatever Mia's final bill ends up being, it will undoubtedly be astronomical. Inflation of medical costs has led to the financial demise of many families, whether insured or not. Although Joel and Linda carry medical insurance, there will be financial liability on their part in the end.

For a young family such as Joel and Linda's, going through this situation will have many challenges. These challenges will be stressful, emotional, and financially burdensome. The objective of this campaign is to minimize the financial effects of this situation, so these three can focus on the most important part--caring for one another, including little Mia.

We respectfully and humbly ask for you to consider making a donation. Any small amount will be a step toward the goal. This is an opportunity to have a significantly positive impact on a young family who is very deserving. Joel and Linda are not the type to seek charity on their own.

Anyone who cannot make a financial contribution can help by sharing this campaign with others. Let's find strength in numbers. Please share this campaign with anyone you believe would be willing to help Joel and Linda. Please take the time to link this campaign to your Social Media; share it with friends and co-workers. You never know who will have the ability and the desire to help in this situation.
