ABOUT US:
We are a working horse rescue and sanctuary committed to helping horses, humans, and Mother Earth. In concert with the community, we help working horses live out their days in comfort and dignity...and help humans connect with, care for, and be better partners to horses and Mother Earth.

At Blue Star, we honor this ancient partnership and take full responsibility for being part of a culture that has benefited greatly by their service.

We created Blue Star Equiculture as a way to give back and express gratitude to our horse "relations." Our many programs celebrate and share horses' greatness with our communities, so that all people can take part in meaningful opportunities to come to understand our equine partners better, "“ and thus care enough about these fellow living beings to do their small part to care for and sustain them on the shared road ahead.

WE BELIEVE:
-The draft horse is a national treasure.

-That horses and humans fundamentally belong together.

-That all horses deserve loving homes where their physical & social needs will be met.

-That "work" should not have a negative connotation, and is better described as productive partnership.

-That in these troubled economic and environmental times, working horses offer a sustainable means of equine husbandry.

-That every working horse deserves to have their needs met for the duration of their natural lives.

WHAT OUR HORSES GIVE TO THE COMMUNITY:

This truly cannot be measured materially, it is so dynamic and far reaching. Horses literally change people's lives, and can be major contributors to communities well being through therapeutic and practical partnerships.

Our horses are extremely interactive with the community through on-farm opportunities, community projects, history tours, parades, private events, farm tours on our leased 129 acre farm, and many other special occasions.

They can help reconnect you to your life. They can help you learn about your own authentic power thru the juxaposition of their own sensitivity and power.

They teach Draft Horse Husbandry at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The course focuses on building a relationship between horse & driver to communicate mutual trust, understanding, confidence, and respect. These future teamsters overview equine anatomy, physiology, care, different harnesses (& care) before weeks of ground driving single and as a team, pulling a drag, and safely hitching to a forecart. We encourage students to incorporate horsepower into sustainable agricultural practices.


For all of our sakes, and the interconnected web of life we all share, help us help the horses in need and maintain a safe space for them to live in. We need them alongside us now more than ever.


WHAT WE NEED:

Funds. We must cover the horse's basic needs with high quality grain, supplements, good quality hay, and fresh water. The horses also need fundamental basic health care, including regular veterinary care, farrier, and dental care. Many of our horses are dealing with chronic health issues, requiring continuous holistic and traditional medical care to see them through rehabilitation.

It costs about $250,000 to run this organization yearly. With our herd members (who provide continual monthly support), Viridian energy, grants, and foundations, we are able to cover a portion of the costs.


As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we rely on donations from those who believe in our mission, and want to see us continue our work into the future.
