Give a Little Joy Through Bags of Fun

What started out as a mother’s wish to find happiness for her daughter fighting brain cancer, has now grown into a larger-than-life goal to reclaim the innocence and playfulness of childhood for those that are threatened by strenuous medical conditions. Bags of Fun is a non-profit organization, funded by the Gabby Krause Foundation, that strives to deliver joy, laughter, and relief to every sick child who’s health and happiness have been compromised by illness.

Self-isolation, a notable effect of the COVID-19 pandemic, has taken a toll on the masses; every day thousands of people wake up and get ready to take on another day of Netflix, video games, puzzles, and numerous other indoor activities. However, while this is relatively new to the majority of people, there are children and families less fortunate than most who have been practicing isolation for months and even years. While being at home for a few months might seem tough, take a second to imagine spending a few months in a hospital, fighting for your own, or your child’s health day after day. As we now know, quarantine is a small price to pay in exchange for saving lives.

As we reflect on the times, it’s important to understand that not everyone is fortunate enough to access fun, indoor activities at will; with living expenses and hospital bills, many families across the country struggle to find ways of bringing joy to their child’s life, and their own as well. The stress, strain, and anxiety that families in these situations experience are immense. This is where Bags of Fun comes into play.

Bags of Fun works to supply children and families in need with, of course, “bags of fun”. In reality, these bags are custom, High Sierra backpacks containing a variety of tools ranging from i-Pads and Kindles to American Dolls and Legos. These “bags of fun” are an essential tool that brings the power of play into the hospitals. For the child, it brings instant excitement and a distraction from their pain, illness, and anxiety. For parents, it is gratitude at a time when being thankful and hopeful is not often possible.

Bags of Fun is a non-profit that derives an extensive majority of its proceeds from large, communal fundraising events. Unfortunately, due to the effects of COVID-19, these events have been postponed until further notice. Because of this, we have decided to start a GoFundMe campaign in order to help Bags of Fun reach their annual goal of funding 100% of the requests they receive.

While we do seek to raise money for as many “bags” as possible, there is also another equally important goal we hope to achieve through this campaign. Many of the major donations come from people of an older age range, oftentimes parents and grandparents. Through our communication with Bags of Fun, we decided that another powerful measure of success within the campaign would be attracting donations from the young adults of the world, who are gearing up to be future leaders in driving innovation and change.

We know that times are tough for everyone right now; and on top of this, many of us are taking our first steps into the real world, meaning that we have yet to establish our own security. This is why donations of any amount have an extremely significant impact. What is truly important to us is knowing that we have done our best to capture some sort of sympathetic, or even empathetic, emotional response from YOU. We do this in the hope that one day down the road when you have found financial security and are in need of finding a good cause, the first organization that comes to mind is Bags of Fun.

We thank you for all of your support during these trying times. This truly is a special organization, and we hope that you will take a chance to see this as well.
