A Christmas Gift: A Tale of Two Livers

This is the time of year when we celebrate the birth of Jesus and give gifts to those we love most in the world. We spend hours on end shopping and searching for that one special gift sure to delight. This has always been a challenge when trying to find something perfect for my dad. He has always been very difficult to shop for. This year is different. This year I have the perfect gift for my dad: a portion of my liver. You see, he has been in liver failure and has become so sick that a transplant is the only option to save his life. By the grace of God, I am a perfect match and that is part one of my Christmas prayer being answered. Part two is in process. We have the surgery planned and are working on logistics. Because of the follow-up care that he and I are going to need, our families have put their lives on hold to take care of us. This means that several people are taking time off work to accomplish this, lots of time. Time off work means no paychecks. This is where you come in. Many people have asked how they can help. We are in financial need to help sustain each of our households, from food and gas, to mortgages, rent, and lodging while we make the several trips back and forth to the hospital in San Francisco.
