No one wants to hear the words "you have cancer", but that's what ended up happening to me. My name is Heather and I'm a writer and storyteller who also serves as the primary caregiver for my family of three (if you include the furbaby, which I do). I noticed the lump a year ago October, but because I don't have medical insurance I didn't see a doctor about it until February, by which time the lump had become a mass that was rather dramatically visible on my neck.
Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia/Lymphoma. Even once we knew that it was cancer and that it was treatable, it took until June to see a doctor who was able to help, July before I could begin any treatment. We were lucky, sort of. We were keeping ahead of the costs. But now I need to start on an additional medication, one that's going to cost over $400 per treatment and I'll need four treatments in the first month and then one a month after that. As well as the blood tests and the scans. And travel costs. And this presumes that nothing goes wrong or comes up unexpectedly.
I need to start on the new medication soon. Within a week at least. And once I start I can't go more than 10 days between the initial treatments. But I can't start unless I have access to the money for it.
Cancer's awful. And having to ask for help, especially with the financial costs, is awful. But I need your help. Thank you.
