Help Buddy Get Better (Chemotherapy)

Hi everyone! My name is David. I’m starting this fundraiser on behalf of my family’s lovely Maine Coon cat, Buddy.

When my father suddenly passed away seven years ago, our world seemed like a cold, lonely place. About a year after my father’s passing, I went to take out the trash when I heard a little cat meowing as he pawed at some empty food cans. I had never dealt with cats before, and at first I was afraid he was going to attack me. However, there was something about his vulnerable eyes and   unusually friendly demeanor that softened my heart; I went out and bought a can of cat food for him, which he proceeded to devour. A few days later my sister and I went out and we found him  again. He bounded towards us, excited to see us again. He had won us over; we begged our mother to let us take him in. She hesitated at first, but his sweet nature soon won her over. We named this cat “Buddy”, because his friendly nature was more reminiscent of a dog than what we knew cats to be like.

I stuck my hand towards him, and he put his paw in mine. This signaled the beginning of an unbreakable friendship. He followed my sister upstairs, to his brand new forever home. Later that week we bought him proper ceramic bowls. He was so thankful to have something to call “his”. He would sleep right next to his food bowl, almost protecting it, afraid that it would get taken away. Over time, his fears slowly dissipated as he realized he had nothing to  be afraid of. We fell in love with this little cat, and we would always protect him from harm. He had finally found his forever  home with us.

We watched him transform from a malnourished, skinny young cat with translucent claws, into a sassy yet loving ball of energy. You can often hear him scurrying around the house, stomping and galloping as he were a race horse. He plays hide and go seek with his catnip mice; he hides them,  and we never find them. He loves to jump up on our untuned piano and walk across the keys; we often joke that he can play the piano better than us!

Whenever my sister is sick, Buddy lays by her side until she feels better, as if he were a protective older sibiling. Whenever someone comes home, whether it be my mom or a complete stranger, Buddy runs up to the door, welcoming everyone with such friendliness and curiosity. Buddy shows so much love to every person he meets. He truly is a member of the family.

A few days ago we rushed Buddy to the ER as he had not eaten in several days. The doctors discovered that he is suffering from renal lymphoma. This is a devastating diagnosis for us, as we were looking forward to many more adventures together  with our sweet earth angel. During his time in the hospital, his condition has improved tremendously. According to his doctor, his kidneys     are performing “above normal” for someone with his condition. However, this type of cancer progresses very quickly; unfortunately, without chemotherapy treatment, his doctors estimated that he would only have another month to live. With chemotherapy, he could recouperate very quickly from his lymphoma and go on to live a cancer-free life. However, we are not able to afford this lifesaving treatment for him on our own. We were able to pay for his initial oncology consultation, but he will need more treatments that we will need help paying for. If you are able to donate any amount to help us pay for this treatment for him, Buddy, the rest of my family, and I would forever be grateful.

Buddy has been a source of healing and a treasured family member for us these past few years.  After everything that he has done for us, we want to thank him by doing everything we can to give him a fighting chance.
