Maria's Emergency Recovery Fund

Donation protected
Maria needs our help. With the encouragement of many friends, she had been working hard to make her young linen rental business (Linens by Isabella, named after her granddaughter) profitable so that she could support her family. She had found regular customers, including a hotel, a school and a florist, and despite many obstacles, was making steady progress in her quest for stability some ten years after assuming custody of her five step-grandchildren.

Then, at the beginning of June, catastrophe struck. Maria fell, severely injuring her leg and landing in the hospital with a deep venous thrombosis. She was unable to work or even walk for two months and is just now starting to be active again. For the rest of her life, she will be on blood-thinning medication to prevent the blood clots that threatened her life, but at least she is able to walk. She is determined to start working again, but she has to begin almost from scratch to put food on the table for her family, pay debts that have piled up while she was incapacitated and restart her business, which has sadly lost customers because of her absence. It’s a lot to ask of a woman over seventy, but I know that she has the courage and the love for her children to succeed.

Please give to Maria’s Emergency Recovery Fund. Even the most modest donation will help Maria and her family recover from this blow, just as she is recovering from her injury.

My name is Raoul Cansino. I'm a teacher at Green Meadow Waldorf School and the president of Helping Hands of Rockland, which has been helping homeless men and women regain hope, dignity and self-reliance since 2004. But it is as a private citizen that I am appealing for help for Maria Winkler's courageous struggle to sustain her family.

We are hoping to raise $10,000 to help Maria buy food and catch up on her medical bills, rent and utilities. Anything left over will help her restart her business, enabling her to purchase inventory and equipment.

Gifts of cash through this site or in kind will go directly to Maria and will help her get back on her feet and work for her family. If you have any questions, please contact me at [email redacted].

Thanks for your help,
