For my thesis I am producing and starring in "Die Mommie Die"by Charles Busch. This hilarious play first premiered in Los Angeles at the Coast Playhouse in 1999 and had it's Off-Broadway debut in 2007 at New World Stages. Busch also starred in the production as Angela Arden, the role I will be creating at SCAD.
A comic melodrama that evokes the 1960's "grande guignol" films that featured aging stars such as Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner. Ex-pop singer, Angela Arden, is trapped in a hateful marriage with film producer Sol Sussman. Desperate to find happiness with her younger lover, an out of work TV actor, Tony Parker, Angela murders her husband with the aid of a poisoned suppository. In a plot that reflects Greek tragedy as well as Hollywood kitsch, Angela's Elektra-like daughter, Edith, convinces Angela's emotionally disturbed son, Lance, that they must avenge their father's death by killing their mother.
This play is brilliantly written and now it is my job as an actor to take the words Mr. Busch wrote and bring them to life. Taking on the role of Angela Arden will be a challenge to say the least, as the audience must believe at all times that she truly is a woman, not just a man in a dress.
The performances will run February 27-March 1 in Savannah Georgia at the Mondanaro Theatre at SCAD.
I ask for everyone's help in raising money. Whether you knew me as a 10 year old kid at Columbus Children's Theatre, you are former teacher, a friend, or even a stranger, please donate and help me bring this play to life. I would be forever grateful. Thank you and have a wonderful holiday season and new year.
