I don't go to the doctor. I don't get sick. I work full time and I am a full time wife and mother of three. My husband bribed me to go to our primary care physician for a routine check-up. My PCP said it was time for my first mammogram. Oh great. More appointments. I'm a very busy manager of a restaurant, but I made the time. The results came back with three areas of concern. I was scheduled for a biopsy. More appointments, this is starting to annoy me now. On Tuesday, June 25, 2013 my doctor called me into his office and told me I had breast cancer. I'm no longer annoyed. I'm scared. I was stage 2b. A 7cm tumor in my left breast. There were tears, lots of tears. But then the fighter in me showed up. My mom put together a stellar team of doctors and we started chemo. I listen, do what they tell me to do, and laugh as often as I can. The tumor is shrinking.
I can beat this. I will beat this.
My health insurance has changed starting Jan 1, 2014. My out of pocket expenses have tripled. I will have surgery in late January or early February followed by radiation therapy. My long term disability is only 60% of my pay. I am truly grateful for this, but it will not cover my medical bills.
If you can help me, it is truly appreciated. If you cannot, then please make the time for a mammogram, or talk to the women in your life and tell them how important these tests are. Early detection. Save a life.
