Love For Lyla

On February 4th my niece, Lyla Grace, was born with a rare diagnosis of idiopathic bilateral vocal cord paresis/paralysis. This has significantly impacted her ability to breathe and swallow on her own. Since birth she has been in the NICU at Children’s Hospital Colorado, 75 miles from home and has yet to be discharged.

Lyla has already been through more than any baby should endure in her twelve short weeks of life. She has only seen the walls of her hospital room while remaining medicated and under-going anesthesia. She has had countless examinations and several surgical procedures, all in hopes of finding more answers for her diagnosis.

We have all been heavily impacted by her journey thus far. The emotional chaos has disrupted almost every avenue imaginable. The time spent at the hospital with Lyla also means a significant amount of time away from home where she has two older brothers, Rylan and Jarrett, rooting for her progress.

The long term medical interventions needed are ambiguous, unpredictable and uncertain. Upon Lyla’s discharge, she will not be cured or fixed; she will require therapies and follow up appointments regularly. Lyla’s specialists unfortunately do not have solid answers for her future.

We do everything we can to remain optimistic.
