Michelle King: Open Heart Surgery

A regular Thursday afternoon at work became not so normal when my mom went from her lunch break at work to being transported by helicopter to a hospital for immediate open heart surgery. With no pre- existing conditions, Michelle began feeling symptoms of what ultimately was an aortic dissection. Her symptoms worsened from not being able to breath and chest pains to a feeling of passing out.
An aortic dissection is a tear in the inner layer of the large blood vessel branching off the heart.
It has been a challenging night as our local hospitals did not have a bed for her and we had to travel to UF Shands. It's been overwhelming thus far but I am relieved that help has been immediate as paramedics explained to me her condition could have worsened quickly without medical attention.
It's 4am on Friday, April 6 and she is in hour 5 of her surgery. The doctors say my mom is doing great and things are looking very promising.
My family anticipates a deeper financial hardship in the upcoming months from these unexpected and expensive medical bills. Due to the fact that she has recently lost her medical insurance things have been very hard.
