This October Bank Holiday I am running the Dublin City Marathon in honour of the amazing Anne!
On the 14th of March our beloved Anne lost her brave, dignified and short battle against cancer. From the day she was diagnosed until her last breath, she faced each and every day with nothing but dignity. Anne being Anne, she was the strongest one amongst us and made sure we never saw her in pain or suffering. “It is what it is” was her motto and she kept true to that until her last breath. I was never one to understand “brave” or “strong” as I’d never seen any so close battle an illness. Anne, each and every day gave me a new look on life and how we face each day. To be privileged enough to be let spend her final few weeks with her I gained an insight into what true bravery and strength is. When Anne left us she took a little piece of us all with her, but left a massive piece of her in all of us and I for one am a better person for knowing her.
The palliative and pastoral care in Portiuncla hospital, Ballinasloe went above and beyond what they should have and we’d love to raise some funds so they can improve the family rooms and basic care for all in the oncology ward in Anne’s honour. For me, to know Anne was to know pure love and I’ll never have a sister like her again. She was warm, loving, caring, mischievous and possibly the sweetest soul on this earth. I never thought I would meet someone who loved a selfie more than I did.
She really was 1 in a million and our world is a little less bright without her. I think of her often and wonder what she'd say to us all when we get upset and sad, probably "cop on" or something equally "Anne" ....
