Life Changes in a Moment Journal

On Saturday, March 3, 2018, the life of the von Schlag family changed dramatically. Patrick suffered a massive heart attack. He was helicoptered to Johns Hopkins Hospital and admitted to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. On Thursday, March 8, 2018, he underwent quintuple cardiac bypass surgery, and currently remains critically ill and fighting hard to recover.

At present, Patrick in on dialysis, a ventilator and requires a balloon pump in his aorta to assist his weakened heart to pump blood to his body. He requires multiple medications to maintain his blood pressure, and now he has been hit with another challenge; he has been diagnosed with an infection.

During the first few days, Patrick was awake and alert, communicating with his wife Elizabeth through blinks and hand signals. Of course, he was also trying to talk around his ventilator tube. If you know Patrick you can imagine how frustrated he must be not to be able to talk!

Everyone who knows Patrick immediately thinks of his warm, joyful, and enthusiastic personality. He is a helper,  and he and his family selflessly jump in and help anyone who needs them. They have unconditionally supported their family, friends, and community. Now, it is our turn to support them.

Patrick is self-employed. He owns his own company, The Deep Creek Center. He is the primary employee, so when Patrick does not work, his company doesn't produce an income. As a self-employed person, he also pays for his own health insurance out of pocket. His wife, Elizabeth, also is employeed by The Deep Creek Center. Their family income is directly dependent on the viability of Patrick's company.

Beyond the mounting medical care expenses, the von Schlags need to keep their household running. They have three children, Robbie who lives in West Virginia, Cristin who is preparing to graduate high school and will be entering the Air Force Academy's class of 2022, and Alena who is in high school. The money collected from this site will go directly toward the families ongoing expenses and medical bills. We hope to create a safety net that will allow Patrick to focus on his recovery without the added stress of worrying about lost income and mounting expenses.

Please contribute what you can. Every single dollar will help the von Schlags weather this storm.
