Special Needs Training Facility in NM
Donation protected
Special Olympics provides every
individual with intellectual/physical disabilities a place of comfort,
acceptance, and the chance to be their best.
I am planning on creating a training center that consists of passionate,
committed individuals from all walks of life, who recognize the value and
unique gifts of people with intellectual and physical disabilities. Who together, share the common belief that
dignity, equality and opportunity is for ALL people.
My name is Michael Edwards and 3 years ago my life was changed forever. The change came the day my son Javery was born and I was told that he had Down syndrome. In the process of learning about my son's diagnosis I have learned a lot about myself and the community we live in. I realized that as a parent of a son with Down syndrome it is my responsibility to educate our community on the gifts and strengths of these individuals.
Our local gyms, whether private or public, do not cater to individuals with these disabilities or even have the time or people to work with them. They rarely have people, or staff who participate in Olympic weightlifting or Power Lifting. Currently there is no facility in New Mexico that offers Olympic lifting for the Special Olympians or Power lifting.
I would like to provide a venue for special Olympic athletes and ably body athletes to train and compete. With your help we could help individuals train to compete locally and nationally. The facility would provide daily, weekly and monthly training sessions for strength and conditioning, in a controlled, safe and fun environment, all the while being supervised by a professional coach to ensure the success of the program and the individual athlete.
As a former college strength coach at the division 1 level and coaching at a high school level, I have the experience and the desire to work with ALL athletes and non -athletes who are looking to better themselves or help others better themselves. I have worked with professional athletes, soldiers, college athletes, high school athletes and individuals who have a desire to become better, stronger and live healthier lives. All the people I have worked with have found strength within themselves and I have seen them grow to become competitive power lifters and Olympic lifters.
Having a larger new facility would allow us to hold local, state, regional and national meets. We have out grown our current training facility and are looking for help to make dreams come true. We had acquired funding and a building, but due to local bureaucracy and building codes we lost the building and funds. We are seeking funding to expand our facility, to build/purchase equipment (platforms, Olympic bars, weights, & spectator viewing area) and a general facility build out.
If you cannot help with a monetary donation please share our story on e-mail, Facebook, twitter or other social network.
Thank you for any help you can give and we thank you for your support.
