Firefighter Challenge / Stair Climb

I’m Louie Disney, firefighter/EMT based in Manhattan, KS; and the Kansas board member for Next Rung.

I signed up for this job to help people. But one of the things that firefighters often forget is how to take care of themselves. That’s why I compete. And that’s what the Scott Firefighter Challenge is all about. We need to continuously challenge ourselves to be the best version of us that we can be — both for the community that we serve as well as for our long term health.

I was proud to be the only firefighter from Kansas to participate in the national competition last year and look forward to returning to nationals again this year. That’s where you come in. I need your help!

When I signed up for this job I didn’t do it for the paycheck. I signed up because I care. I compete because I’m driven to improve. But I can’t do it alone. Fighting fires is about teamwork. And competing is about community.

Please join my team, be a part of my community and help me raise awareness for firefighter health.

The Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge is a great opportunity for firefighters to push their bodies to the limit, and then go a little further. I plan to do at least 10 competitions this year. That’s a big goal!

Between hotel, airfare and entry fees each weekend can cost roughly $1,000.00. This is why it’s so important that I raise some money — both to offset those costs and to raise awareness of firefighter health. The statistics are there and it’s shocking to see how many firefighters suffer from severe health issues each year. Fact: 47% of on-duty firefighter deaths are cardiac related, most of which are preventable.

As a board member, it’s been great to partner with Next Rung to raise awareness about the importance of fitness levels to prevent more statistics like the one above. Each donation you make to Next Rung is tax deductible and can be directed towards my journey to raise awareness and to elevate my personal health goals.

Here’s the competition schedule for this year, which includes both stair climbing and FFCC*:

3/11 Scott race for air, Seattle
7/28 Rapid City, SD*
4/26 FFCC Indianapolis, IN*
8/3 Longmont, CO*
5/4 Tinley Park, IL*
8/31 Grand Island, NE*
6/29 Montgomery, AL*
9/9 KC 9/11 Climb
7/1 NYC 9/11 Climb
10/5 Branson, MO*
7/6 Bloomington, MN*
10/22 Sacramento, CA*

My current personal record (PR) time for the main challenge is 1:58. I plan to break the 1:50 time this year to qualify for nationals as an individual. By the end of the year I want to break the 1:40 time to enter the elite of the elite for my age group (under 40) to be considered a part of the Lion’s Den.
