$5,000 Survival to Sustainability

Tax deductible
SHELTER CHILDREN'S HOME
In January 2018, I was blessed with an amazing opportunity to travel to Kenya, Africa on a trip called "Mission Vision Safari" with my friend Christie Skinner and five other women.

During our trip we met Mary Wambui Muirvri, Director of the Shelter Children's Home and learned about the great work she is doing in Ngong, Kenya to rescue and rehabilitate children.  I quickly fell in love with Mary, the children and this powerful initiative.

During 2018, our “Mission Vision Safari” team is continuing to work together to support Mary and we are focused on SUSTAINABILITY projects for the orphanage.  A Sustainability Center (building) is key to facilitating the ongoing sustainability efforts so our team has been focused on raising funds for the construction of this building.

SUSTAINABILITY CENTER Total Budget $42,000
2018 Year to Date Donations: $32,000
Gap to Fill by November 1st: $10,000

CALL TO ACTION:
Help Raise $5,000 in October 2018
to complete our fund raising goal to build a Sustainability Center.

MATCHING FUNDS: Leah & Ford Alexander
If together we can raise $5,000 in donations in October 2018, my husband, Ford Alexander, and I will match dollar for dollar up to $5,000 to help fill our $10,000 gap.

SURVIVAL TO SUSTAINABILITY

Why is the Sustainability Important?
Even with donations, Shelter Children's Home struggles from month-to-month to provide the basic needs for the children of the orphanage.

In 2016, when HRS True Hope took over as a primary partner with Shelter Children's Home, Joel Holcomb began to educate and institutionalize sustainability practices and initiatives at the shelter: solar power, water, gardening, honey bees, chickens, cows, and goats.  These initiates offer resources to feed the children, and also generate sources of revenue for the shelter, offering more self-sufficiency and relieving pressure of full dependence on donations for the shelter's survival month-to-month.

How will the Sustainability Center be Used?

Sustainability Center, located on shelter property, will provide dry, temperature controlled storage for vegetables grown in the garden and storage for seeds and tools.  In addition, it will include a processing area meeting the requirements for the certification of honey, as well as processing of chickens and eggs.

The Sustainabiltiy Center also includes a store front from selling produce, honey and other items generating revenue to support the 150+ children onsite and cared for by the shelter.

MORE ABOUT... SHELTER CHILDREN'S HOME
Shelter Children’s Rehabilitation Centre, fondly known as Simba Village was founded in 1997. Since then the Village has grown from strength to strength and is currently resident to 148 children. They are situated on the outskirts of Nairobi next to the NgongHills in the Maasai area of Kibiko in Kenya and are officially a registered Children’s homes by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Since inception the Home has been able to provide care and support to over 250 children. They have continued to advocate for the rights of children in the community as well as sensitizing the community about the value of education to every child. They have also, in the process of carrying on with their mandate, managed to create job opportunities to the surrounding community.

Their exit program has so far been very successful in that they have been able to lobby for jobs and full reintegration for kids who have completed their program. They have also been able to empower children with life skills both in the institution and at the community level, besides rescuing Maasai girls from early marriages and FGM.

Their core mandate is to:
·         Provide children with quality education and life skills in order to mold a wholesome citizen;
·         Advocate for child care and total eradication of any form of child abuse;
·         Promote children rights, and;
·         Provide all children with equal opportunities to pursue lifetime goals and attain ultimate personal fulfillment.

On the basis of their core mandate, the Shelter has a three pronged program to provide the following essential services:
1.    Education, which comprises pre-school (i.e. early childhood education), primary school, secondary school, and tertiary education (i.e. university and middle level colleges);
2.    Childcare, which entails feeding, health care, counselling, accommodation, and recreation, and;
3.    Reintegration of the children with their families and society through family tracing, home visits, follow ups, assessments, and capacity building

To deliver their mandate, the Shelter concentrates on the following cardinal objectives:

·         Provision of basic needs to the target children, which include shelter, food, clothing, health care, education and recreation activities;
·         Rehabilitation of children by enabling them to acquire human dignity, self-reliance and self-esteem through counselling, life skills development, spiritual nourishment, continuous assessment and capacity building;
·         Empowering and engaging community on issues regarding children rights through such forums as training and seminars, capacity building sessions, networking with local leaders and churches and by offering subsidized services.
