Historic Jamaica: History is Well Hidden

History is well hidden. In light of recent events, where black lives are shown as a struggle, instead of a full, rounded three dimensional existence, it is time to resurrect this page. With new technologies and new ways of gathering information; if history and its images aren’t online, it didn’t happen.

The funds will be used in a few key ways. To host a project of this magnitude (photos and videos) costs at least £90 a year. With the minimum threshold met, this site can be hosted and accessed by all for years to come. As it stands, a lot of images are hidden in private online archives (such as online libraries), and you need to pay fees just to look at them.Historic Jamaica  provides various photos to be seen by all. This will also fund the name change and associated domain costs to something more appropriate than the initiator’s web page. With extra funding, we can devote time to app development (Android), which will link to the page as well as allow people to contribute their own pictures (videos and stories) to the site.

Photos and videos should be seen and digested by all, to realise that history isn’t just ‘white history’ but black and brown too. At present, the website is a collage of images; we aim to provide accompanying descriptions and explanations. This requires time and effort to do in a meaningful way, which funding will provide. The website has shown its value to the internet sphere in terms of being sourced by History of Jamaica  as well as ordinary people being moved enough by its absence to ask us why the website isn’t up.

With regards to funding timescales, the sooner the better. The site and its content existed for several years, but had to be closed down due to lack of funds to keep it going. By fervent demand, the site has been now reinstated, but it needs funds for it to thrive.

We will be quite grateful for the funding we receive. This will allow us to flesh out the galleries on the website from videos to various ephemera, and preserve history for future generations needing to see their full story being told. Pictorial Jamaica
