Keith's Medical Fund

In November of 2016, our dad Keith unexpectedly collapsed at work and was rushed to the hospital. There, doctors uncovered evidence of long-term heart damage from a previously unknown silent heart attack.  Due to his condition, doctors mandated an external defibrillator device, which, out of concern for his safety, they “would not let him leave the hospital without”, despite it’s not being covered by insurance.  Months later in April 2017, as a more permanent safeguard, Dad had a pacemaker/ICD (implantable defibrillation device) implanted. While this necessary device provided much-needed peace of mind for possible later heart attacks, the out of pocket costs were immense.

After months of treatment and rehabilitation, while on the road to recovery, it became apparent that Dad’s current labor-intensive job would not allow him to return to full health. He decided that in order to stay healthy, he needed to find a job that had better insurance, and that was more physically appropriate. Recovery took on new meaning as Dad began the major change of moving to Palm Coast.

In October of 2017, while in the midst of relocating his home and interviewing for jobs, he was struck by an unexpected incident of Sudden Cardiac Arrest. Dad was electrically shocked by his pacemaker a total of 35 times within 30 minutes, a traumatic episode that the pacemaker company would later describe as “completely unheard of”. (In a hospital setting, doctors would only use a defibrillator a maximum of 3 or 4 times).  Dad did not give up, and neither did his pacemaker! Thankfully, his wife Cathlene was able to keep Dad calm and contact emergency services, which rushed him to the hospital, ultimately saving his life.

While we are indescribably grateful that the pacemaker and doctors performed their duties, the incident has resulted in the need for extensive continued treatment, all while in-between insurance and jobs.

In the short time since the episode, Dad has managed to secure a job and begin the next road to recovery. Unfortunately, he will not be eligible for insurance for several months, and while he may be eligible for future coverage, it is unlikely that any of these events from the past two years will be covered.

While the amount that we are seeking is substantially less than the bills and expenses that have accrued, our goal is to bring family, friends and anyone who can help together to help provide financial support in whatever way we can so that Dad can continue to work on his emotional, physical, and financial recovery.

We love and appreciate our family and friends, and we thank you for your continued help and support. Thank you for keeping Dad and Cathlene in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

Love,
Sean and Lisa
