NewHope for MikeKern’s Fight w/CRPS!

Thank you for your time and efforts in reading about a New Hope in my fight against Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.
While on the job in 2013, I injured my back while climbing a ladder. The pain I felt was initially in my knee and subsequently led to me falling from the ladder. I was able to grab hold of the ladder on the way down and caused me to land on my feet, which only exacerbated my back injury.
The incident caused disks in my lower back to put severe pressure on a nerve that went down my leg. Our state’s broken Workman’s Compensation system refused to fix the injury to my back, while I walked only with the aid of crutches for two years. Because of their refusal to repair my injuries and even to do the proper testing to accurately diagnose any problems, I sought out an independent medical evaluation from a specialist. He diagnosed me with having ComplexRegionalPainSyndrome (CRPS).
For those that aren’t familiar with CRPS, you’re not alone. I found that many doctors aren’t familiar either and even if they are, they refuse to give treatment as it has no cure. CRPS is known as being the Most Pain Known to Mankind and is often known as the “Suicide Disease,” because of its unbelievable, unrelenting and unforgiving pain. It’s rated above amputation, childbirth and is several notches above the more widely known pain causing condition, Fibromyalgia. Mind you, I’m no stranger to pain. Among many things, I’ve had over 60 kidney stones and surgeries to remove them, but there is no comparison between kidney stone pain and CRPS pain.
There isn’t a second of the day that I’m not feeling the effects of CRPS pain which includes, but is not limited to: extreme burning sensations - literally as if you’re being set on fire; electrocution sensations - that I can’t begin to describe how painful its effects are at the time and sometimes even days later; extreme freezing sensations that can feel like being burnt, but vastly different in many ways; extreme pressure and pulling in effected areas to where I feel like I’ve got the weight of a truck on me or that I feel like I’m torturously being pulled apart like in medieval times. It also causes the mainly effected areas to be extremely, extremely sensitive to the touch and for me it’s mainly my right knee. The slightest touch, bump, jarring can cause a flare up that can cause my already high pain levels to skyrocket. Loud noises, bright lights, crowds and other social interactions can cause migraine level headaches, anxiety and have other effects that can actually cause more pain. Any activity that I do, which is extremely limited, I end up paying for with increased pain levels every single time no matter what.
Much of my time is spent in my chair at home and my family has learned to deal with my shortcomings and limitations and the vast majority of my physical efforts are given to just being there for them. Simple tasks are the equivalent to running a marathon for me. I’ve sought out the care from various pain specialists, neurosurgeons, and doctors who have performed a back surgery, implanted a spinal chord stimulator trial, and have had four dozen injections of various types in my lower back and one in my knee and have also had countless prescriptions written to help deal with this condition and all have had very little to no benefit and zero lasting benefits. It’s like having the worst day of your life and then knowing tomorrow is most likely going to be worse.
You tend to lose faith in people, medicine and even worse, in spite of my best efforts, you lose Hope. Ultimately I know that we have a loving God and He is in control and Jeremiah 29:11 says that, “For I know the plans to prosper you and not to harm you,” declares the Lord, “plans to give you Hope and a future.” However when faced by this level of pain, even with constant reminders, your thinking can be altered. Every day I pray that there will be healing and for clarity and direction in my life and in many ways, I feel closer to God even though I’ve wondered and questioned what in the world His plan for my life could be when I’m inflicted with this physically limiting, chronic pain disease.
We’re going on Five Years now without receiving an answer that I have asked for everyday and surprisingly a response came through a friend of a friend. My wife Alissa’s friend, Crystal Absher, knows someone that found a place called the Neurologic Relief Center in Arkansas that is having success in treating CRPS! Mind you, positive results for people with this painful disease are so uncommon that people voluntarily get put into Comas for months at a time, for various types of infusions, even though there’s little to no positive results to speak of. Naturally my tendency is to doubt and dispel any stories or results, it’s what I’ve been programmed to do and how I see the world right now. However, after not only reading the stories of results but seeing the looks of the people in their eyes before and after being treated in their many posts of results on their Facebook page and website, I’m convinced. Only someone who has known chronic pain on the level that I have can see “that look” in others eyes and know that what they’re experiencing. The results are not only real, they’re Miraculous! I had given up the possibility and chance for anything resembling Life as I had known. Chances are, I’d only get worse and I have already seen those effects physically, emotionally and mentally.
However, much like in my favorite movie, StarWars, much of success is built on one concept and that’s Hope. No matter the odds, no matter the obstacles, Hope can give you the faith to seek the solutions that can change the world...my world...and that has been restored tenfold. One of the Neurologic Relief Center’s concepts is to restore and enable the body to heal itself and get it out of the stuck FightOrFlight mode that CRPS puts the body into. Let’s face it, our bodies are created by an Amazing God and I believe that that holistic approach to healing is profoundly more powerful than big pharmaceutical.
The individualized care comes at a cost and I’ll need your help to enable me to go to Arkansas in April to see this miracle through. Please help me on my journey towards healing both inside and out. A New Hope is an amazing thing to experience, I’d love to be able to be pain free and whole not only for myself, but for my family. My son, Parker, told me a few years ago after getting treatment, “Run Daddy!” Well, I want to RUN out of that place and show and spread the miracle of God in my life! I sincerely Thank You for contributing and sharing this, God Bless!
