Hurricane Harvey was the costliest tropical cyclone on record, inflicting nearly $200 billion in damage, primarily from widespread flooding in the Houston metropolitan area.
Meet the Velasquez family. They were deeply affected by hurricane Harvey. Our goal is to help them recover from physical damage and emotional.
“My name is Michelle Velasquez. My husband Raul Tamez and I have 5 sons together and a nephew who lives with us. We are a family born and raised here in Houston, Texas. In August of 2017 my home suffered major damages due to Hurricane Harvey. We lost everything. Everything that filled a household of 8. Our walls, furniture, appliances, clothes, photos, home videos, toys,etc. it took several days before we could even reach our home due to high waters. It was heartbreaking and emotional to have to throw everything out and watch our kids put their heads down as we had to throw out their belongings as well. The one good thing that came out of the horrific Harvey was the way Houston came together to lend each other a hand or two to help clean up. It’s still very much a work in progress. My children have expressed multiple times their sadness of losing our home. I try to keep reassuring them that in due time our house will be a home again. It will be filled with furniture, clothes and toys again.”
