No matter how you know Yvonne Ardrey, you probably felt close enough that you referred to her as “Von”. Maybe it is the way she speaks to you, laughs with you, looks you in the eye or holds your children, Von has a way about her that always makes you or your children feel safe and loved. This week, the unthinkable happened...Von suffered a cardiac arrest. Because it is believed that too much time passed between the time of her arrest and resuscitation, Von’s cognitive function is at substantial risk. As I have sat bedside with her family for days in ICU, I can’t help but think of the many many children that may not get to know Von or how my children may not remember her the way I do when she recovers from this tragedy. I also think of how her medical bills are mounting, how she was finally able to buy her first house last year and how she has been trying to prepare for her baby girl to attend college. She has taken care of so many families, it seemed only fair to see if we could “take a minute”, as Von has often said, to enjoy what we have and to think of the the ways we got here. For many of us, Von allowed us to do that...when she came into our homes and graced us with what she knew best.
