Cambodias Dr. Doolittle

A hand-up, not a hand-out for Cambodia’s own Dr Dolittle - and the pagoda and street animals of Siem Reap Money raised from this fundraiser goes towards a medical outreach program (covering ticks, fleas, worms, TVT cancer, neutering and spaying) - including Rabies and Parvovirus as well as cat flu vaccines - for the pagoda and street-living cats and dogs of ‘Temple-town’, aka Siem Reap, and the surrounding region of Angkor Wat. As well, a proportion of the funds will go towards improving the local vet clinic of Ouk Hok Sy Veterinary and upskilling the local vet. Meet Thy Buntha, aka Ouk Hok Sy Veterinary. A 35-year-old dedicated Khmer animal practitioner who works tirelessly out of a simple metal shed near the temples of Angkor Wat. Seven days a week, from dusk to dawn, Buntha attends - mainly single-handedly - to the welfare of hundreds of local animals; a childhood dream of his since his first dog stepped on a landmine explosive during the aftermath of this once Khmer Rouge war-ridden country. With no vet or medical treatment in sight, he could do little but watch his beloved four-legged companion die. In 2017, in Cambodia, the situation for local animals is still pretty bleak. A group of global volunteers which has joined forces with the local vet clinic would like to change this! We attend to many street and pagoda animals requiring medical treatment - including providing Rabies vaccines and spay-and-neutering programs - as well as educating the locals (the monks and wider community alike) along the way. We often have emergencies and are asked by the locals or tourists for help. Funds being raised in this campaign will be used to send Ouk Hok Sy Veterinary back to school for on-going veterinary training and up-skilling classes, locally and within SEA; educating the locals with information in their language about better local animal welfare care, and giving alternatives to current practices; as well as purchasing much-needed medication for our regular medical outreach programs (eg, basic equipment, core vaccinations [including Rabies shots], TVT cancer treatment, emergency operation funds) for those dogs and cats in need who have been abandoned by previous careless owners and dumped by the hundreds inside the local pagodas. It’s one paw at a time.
