This page is dedicated to my son Benjamin. Ben is a 22 year old man and has been fighting cancer for the better part of two years now. Ben has testicular cancer with metastases involving liver, spleen, kidneys, lungs and brain. Ben's treatment has been multiple cycles of chemotherapy including high dose chemo with stem cell transplant and external beam radiation. This has all been extremely difficult and Ben has been unbelievably courageous and brave throughout. Very recently our medical team informed us that we have run out of options for treating Ben’s cancer. The disease is too advanced and trying to go after it with more chemo and such would likely result in less time for Ben than letting it go untreated. The plan going forward is to switch from treating his disease to managing his symptoms and keeping him as comfortable as possible for whatever time he has left. They are saying that is likely to be some number of months. Our hearts are broken.
Ben knows all this information now and though obviously devastated he is facing this dire situation head on with the same courage and bravery that got him through the past couple of years of fighting this cancer. This guy is a total badass and he is my hero forever!
As I write this we are still in the hospital but should be going home within the next couple days. One good thing is that after we get home any care Ben will need will come to him and we won’t have to keep coming to the hospital…that’s done.
Any funds received will go to whatever Ben wants to do with what time he has. Nobody should have to have a bucket list at 22…but we’re working on it. One thing for sure is we want to get him together with his girlfriend Katie as much as possible. Katie graduated from SDSU this year and is back home in Oregon. She just started a job but should be coming soon…trying to work stuff out.
Many of you who will read this have already supported Ben for his fight against cancer and I, his Mom Imelda and Ben thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Friends and family have rallied around him and this is so awesome!
