Two days ago I watched my childhood home burn to ashes on the news. Two police officers, Tiffany Enriquez and Kaulike Kalama, both parents, were shot and killed trying to protect my friends and family. Two of our neighbors were attacked with gardening tools. My mama was so brave and managed to take the tool he used off of him. Our neighbor made it out alive and believes my mom helped save her life. Although the remains are unidentified, the landlord is likely to have lost her life in the fire. Firefighters could only watch helplessly as several homes burnt to rubble before the scene was secure and the perpetrator could be found. I feel blessed that my niece was out surfing and that my friend and her baby that lived downstairs were not home when this happened, as we lived directly next door to the gunman. Although my parents were home and involved in the altercation, they are both safe and unharmed. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those that lost their lives in this horrible tragedy.
Our neighborhood was a tight knit community with kids always playing on the street. I remember countless sidewalk pot-lucks with people sharing food and playing music. My family put everything into making this house a forever home. My grandparents first bought it when they moved to Oahu, my dad spent months on end researching the history of the house and the neighborhood until it was finally awarded with historic designation. At the end of the day, material things can all be replaced. Houses can be rebuilt. New memories can be made. As long as my family is safe, I will always have a place to call home.
I've created a fundraiser to help us recover from the fire and start a new chapter of life. Every donation will go towards recreating what was destroyed. Thank you to all our friends and family that have reached out to send their love and support through these horrific events. I am so grateful for the power of human compassion.
