We'd like you to meet a colleague and friend of ours, Susan Rowsell Tomecek.
Susan is a Cabin Safety / Aviation Occupational Health and Safety Inspector with Transport Canada. She also worked as a flight attendant for Wardair, Royal Airlines and Canadian North. She's one of the kindest, hard-working, helpful people we know. Susan turned 48 this past July. The month before that, she was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease).
ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease.
People living with the disease become progressively paralyzed due to degeneration of the upper and lower motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord.
Eighty per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of diagnosis "“ unable to breathe or swallow.
Ten per cent of those affected may live for 10 years or longer.
Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 Canadians currently live with this fatal disease.
ALS has no known cure or effective treatment yet. For every person diagnosed with ALS, a person living with ALS dies.
As Susan's disease progresses, she will need equipment and extensive care. Her daughter, Chelsea, is entering university this fall with Rachel only a couple of years away from that.
Four of Susan's colleagues and friends, Janice Berling, Lise Demontigny, Alex Pompei and Andrew Larsen will be participating in the upcoming Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Half-Marathon on October 20, 2013. Their goal is to raise $5000 dollars to assist with equipement and extensive care.
