I'm Will Johnson, originally from Dickinson, Texas, and this GoFundMe is set up to help my parents, Steve and Linda Johnson, restart their lives after Hurricane Harvey. They reside in one of the hardest hit areas, Dickinson, Texas. Their home was flooded on Saturday night, as Harvey hovered over Houston. They don't have flood insurance, and basically everything below the waist in their home is destroyed. When I was growing up, we got 41 inches of rain locally from Tropical Storm Allison without getting water in the house, and this storm was predicted to have less rain. Unfortunately the Dickinson Bayou was not as forgiving this time as seemingly the entire city was flooded.
My parents are both in their 60's, and (before the storm hit anyway) my father has another approximately 10 years before he can retire. They need to stay in the area due to his work, but the house is effectively destroyed. A new house is definitely not in the budget, and they need new housing in the area before they can move further inland, closer to their grandkids, and retire. Their cars, clothes, and furniture were all damaged, not to mention the roof, walls, and floors of their home. Luckily these are just meaningless possessions, and their spirit is positive and trusting that things will work out for the better.
My parents are very involved in their local church, Shrine of the True Cross, (also flooded by the storm), and have always given to the community in both their time and money beyond anyone I've ever known. My parents would never ask anyone for help. When the house was filling up with water, they hunkered down, saved what they could, ate the Blue Bell Ice Cream before it melted, and never asked anyone for help. Even now, as everything they own is damaged by water, they would never ask anyone for a handout, so I'm asking for them, to contribute anything you can to help two incredible folks who raised 4 children as good as they could and are some of the best human beings you could ever meet. All donations collected will go directly to my parents to be used on recovery during this trying time.
