I have started this fundraiser to help
a local family that has been hit hard with financial difficulty due
to years of dealing with incapacitating health problems.
In 2008 Matt was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic with a loss of blood flow to his lower left leg. An arterial graft (bypass) was performed on that leg to restore the blood flow. Unfortunately, it was too late to save his toes and they had to be amputated. It was also discovered that Matt has two fairly rare blood disorders that each adversely affect blood clotting. He was in and out of the hospital with further complications for another six months. As a result he lost his job and his insurance. He never made a full recovery and continued to have debilitating and painful problems with his legs over the next several years.
These complications continued until May of this year, when Matt returned to the Cleveland Clinic. Testing determined that the bypass was completely blocked and there was no blood flow to his leg. The only course of action left was to amputate his leg below the knee. Although this was devastating news to Matt and his family, the amputation was done. Matt is now healthier than he has been for years and working towards being able to walk again with a prosthetic leg. Matt sees this as a new beginning and is determined to once again be able to work and support his family.
The long recovery process, hospitalizations and medical care have resulted in an overwhelming and mounting debt. Matt's wife was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis over ten years ago and has been unable to contribute financially.
This family has experienced more than their share of hardship. They could really use a hand to help them get back on their feet (so to speak).
