It's the worst nightmare a mother could ever experience, feeling helpless as your young child teeters between life and death...The uncertainty, the forecasted financial debt, the fear of loosing your loved one.
YESTERDAY on August 18, 2017, 10 year old Leila Tuiofu was struck by an SUV while playing outside near her home. Her small-framed body was thrown from the impact, leaving a dent on the car. Her mother - Tiana, rushed to the scene and was shocked to see that part of Leila's body was behind her. Upon arrival the paramedics saw that she was in serious condition. Her leg was broken, her breathing unstable, and she was quickly life-flighted to Children's Primary Hospital in SLC, Utah. Leila suffered a major break in her femur bone. She had a concussion, her lungs were bruised and was having trouble breathing. Leila underwent surgery last night and rods were installed in her bone to stabilize her leg. The Doctors had to scrape the gravel from her back and later confirmed she had compression fractures in her spine from the impact.
Needless to say, we are very concerned. Leila is only 10 years old - and as smart and cautious as they come, a super sweet girl who follows the rules. But, as she chased the ball into the street she thought she could outrun the car coming towards her. She is currently in the Intensive Care Unit struggling to breath because of her internal injuries, but is stable. Leila has been in agonizing pain. The Doctors hope that she can recover and rehabilitate her broken leg. It's going to require many hours of physical therapy and a huge financial cost, not to mention one-on-one time to comfort and guide Leila as she grows older with her injuries.
Miraculously Leila lived through the impact, but her accident has been catastrophic on many levels. It is estimated that from Leila's accident, the out-of-pocket costs for her family wil be around $100,000. So, she really, really could use our help!! Funds raised will go towards medical bills.
